a wake up call

We live in a sweet little neighborhood.  Many of you know it quite well and may have at one time lived here yourself.  Most of the folks are Christians who live here and most of them are the same kind of Presbyterians we are.  It’s a fairly like-minded little neighborhood.  But then there are other folks as well who aren’t as like-minded.  In fact, not even close.  And since we don’t live or work with a lot of non-believers these people should quite easily be the beneficieries of a lot of love and outreach.  We have a family in our neighborhood that is being evicted today.  I know nothing of the circumstances but their children (two boys and a girl) have been regulars around about Jonesville since we moved here last year.  It’s a hard balance because they don’t behave the way I would want my boys to behave and they use language I’d probly not want Jonesboys to use–nothing too scandalous, just not exactly to my taste.  It is just sad to me that we didn’t welcome them more, we weren’t kinder, we didn’t reach out to them with open arms, lots of times we just tried to tolerate.  It was a great opportunity for us and I’m sad they’re leaving.  It was a reminder to me today that nothing lasts forever, there won’t always be another chance to offer a little one a cup of water, or a popsicle or some attention from a mommy.  Or the opportunity to show my own boys how to love someone who really isn’t that different from them after all.  And a good reminder to pray for these opportunities to come our way, ’specially for the stay-at-home mom-types, where our home is our ministry to those inside as well as those outside.  I don’t know what will happen to this family, but I know they do have relatives in the area and a place to go next, thankfully.

  • thanks… a very timely post. Being on a street with 15 kids our kid’s ages, we play a lot with kids who do things differently than we do. Sometimes I just wish I didn’t have to deal with various issues that come up b/t kids being kids and playing together. Or three 5- year old girls playing in my just cleaned basement. We have such an opportunity with these families and Lord willing, we’ll be here for a while. Thanks for a reminder to offer the much needed cup of water freely.

  • What a great post and reminder! It reminds me of Christ saying to the Apostles, “let the little children come unto Me.” And you know, He didn’t say ‘only the ones who go to Sunday School,’ or something like that…
